MARGAO: Farmers have started agricultural works in full swing in Salcete as monsoon has satisfactorily set in the State. Ploughing, weeding and sowing has begun in most of the fields.
The South-west monsoon, which usually arrives in Goa by the end of first week of June, became active in the last week of the month. Hence, the farmers had to take up agricultural work late this year.
Farming is still practiced on a large scale in all eight constituencies of Salcete namely Benaulim, Madgaon, Fatorda, Curtorim, Nuvem, Navelim, Velim and Cuncolim. Interestingly, farmers here still prefer to plough their fields with oxen as compared to using tractors.
When the correspondent communicated with some of the farmers, almost all of them expressed concern over the lengthy delay in the monsoon this year.
