VALPOI: Taking the cognisance of a Herald report on Kelavade farmers complaining of lady finger crops destroyed by insects, the officials from the Agriculture Department on the directions of Agriculture Minister Chandrakant Babu Kavlekar conducted a site inspection of the fields in the village.
Herald in its edition dated April 27, 2020 had highlighted the problems faced by the farmers, who had accused the Agriculture Department officials of not providing them with pesticides and other facilities despite several complaints. The farmers had demanded that the government provide good price for lady fingers as they had claimed that the current price of Rs 35 per kg was unreasonable.
Following directions from the minister, the officers visited at Kelavade, in Sattari and met the farmers. They conducted a site inspection of their lady fingers fields and held a long discussion with farmers regarding their problems.
According to villagers, they have briefed the officials regarding their problems and have demand a reasonable price for lady fingers.
“We have visited Kelavade for site inspection and have noticed that lady finger crops have been affected due to three types of diseases. The farmers have demanded that the Horticulture Corporation that they be paid for their produce at the earliest and accused the corporation of delaying the payment. They have demanded compensation for crop loss. Now we will prepare a report on farmers’ grievances and submit the same to the Agriculture Minister, said Kishor Bhave, Assistant Director of Agriculture.
