PANJIM: Lawyer-activist Aires Rodrigues has moved the High Court of Bombay at Goa challenging the ordinance issued by the Goa government extending the tenure of Goa University (GU) Vice Chancellor (VC) Dr Satish Shetye by one year.
Rodrigues sought the court’s intervention through a letter petition filed before the division bench comprising Justice F M Reis and Justice
K L Wadane.
He submitted to the court that by the manner in which the government extended the term of the VC, it had compromised and trampled on the autonomy and independence of the university.
A day before Dr Shetye was due to retire on October 25 on attaining the age of 65 years, the government issued an ordinance extending his tenure by one year despite Goa Governor and GU Chancellor Mridula Sinha rejecting the government’s recommendation to amend the GU statutes. Sinha had instead asked GU to relieve the VC and Registrar V Shetye
last Friday.
