PANJIM, MARCH 31
Giving an indication that corruption in any form would not be tolerated, the Goa Police today suspended Sub Inspector Praveen Powar for allegedly demanding money  from a British non-Resident Indian (NRI)  to let her board the flight back to the United Kingdom at the  Dabolim  airport.
The incident took place early this month when the British tourist Fatima Fernandes was returning to the United Kingdom on a Thomson Chartered flight.
Confirming the suspension Deputy Inspector General of Police Ravindra Yadav said that Powar was placed under suspension after they received a letter from the British tourist.
“Fatima Fernandes stated that she was allegedly intercepted on the airport by the accused before boarding the flight. The lady also stated that she was harassed by the PSI demanding $100, despite she carrying valid documents and a ticket to fly back,” Yadav told reporters.
Yadav said that departmental inquiry has been initiated in the matter, which will probe the accusations made against Powar.
According to information received here, the complainant works with a London-based firm and had arrived in Goa on February 5 on her month long holiday.
The police officials said the NRI had sent the complaint through one of her family members who resides in South Goa.
After the matter came to light, SP (Immigration) Tony Fernandes had served a notice to the PSI who did not respond to the notice, earning suspension from the department.
This is the seventh suspension in the last one month by Goa Police for corruption. Six police personnel including one police inspector were suspended early this month for alleged links with the drug mafia.
