ALDONA: On Wednesday afternoon, a baffling sight greeted commuters on Aldona’s Carona-Calvim bridge- around 100 used brassieres were found strewn along both sides of the bridge, some jauntily hanging off branches of trees on the stretch.
While passers-by were amused by the sight, they were left puzzled, as the ‘prank’ raised more questions than answers. Where did the pranksters find that many bras? Were they stolen from clotheslines or given voluntarily? How did they manage to dump them along the busy bridge in broad daylight?
The predominantly large-sized undergarments were a colourful lot, some very fancy with trims of satin and lace, prompting locals to wonder why they were discarded.
The scenic bridge is a popular hangout spot for the youth of the village, and locals often spend their evenings at the breezy spot, exchanging local news and taking in the view. However, the bridge is also a haven for anti-social elements after dark, as groups of youngsters converge there to drink alcohol.
While most passers-by ignored the bras, local man Sameer Gadekar spent the better part of his evening picking up the undergarments, to clear the bridge of litter. “Even this morning, the bridge was clean. I do not know who did this, or why, but I didn’t find it amusing as I had to clean up this mess,” said Gadekar, while placing the bras in a cardboard box. He left the boxes to be picked up by garbage collectors in the morning.
“I request the local authorities to investigate this matter, and help prevent such pranks by illuminating the bridge and installing CCTVs on the stretch,” he said.
