Aldona MLA inspects root cause of growing water hyacinth

MAPUSA: Aldona MLA Carlos Ferreira conducted site inspection of Mapusa River in presence of officials of Department of Captain of Ports, WRD, Sarpanchas of Bastora, Moira panchayat, Chairperson of Mapusa municipal Council and Environmentalists in order to understand the root cause and initiate an action plan to remove the rapidly growing water hyacinth.

“Fishermen’s have bought to our notice that lot of fresh water species have started breeding in the water which usually people don’t eat and is affecting the normal saline water fish, which is also a drawback due to this growing water hyacinth,” said a local Sangam Mhapsekars.

Environmentalists said that water hyacinth multiplies overnight so if we want to clean it, it will be having to be all or nothing. The water hyacinth blocks the sunlight and oxygen so slowly the fish start dyeing. Fresh water is entering salt water and changing the entire pH balance of the river”, Beverly, an environmentalist said.

“If this issue is not resolved then it will badly affect the aquatic life. Aquatic Plants and fish will die and this will again bring up new problems. One of the cause for this is drop in salinity which results in fresh water entering in saline water which is one of the cause for this which results in chocking. This can even lead to flooding,” MLA Ferreira said.
