An attempt by two youth to rob a house at Alto-Dabolim, Vasco, was foiled by alert neighbours on Sunday afternoon, before they were handed over to Vasco police.
Vasco police provided the names of the accused as Aziz Mohammed Ali Dharwadkar (20) and Kiran Hanumanta Rajput (25), both residents of Motidongar-Margao.
It is learnt that Aziz is a habitual offender and his name has figured in different police stations in the State, while Rajput had recently appeared for IRB police recruitment drive and had cleared his physical test and interview successfully.
According to Vasco police, the accused gained entry into the house through the rear door and while they were busy collecting valuables, complainant Ramdas Bandekar, who is residing in the neighbourhood, raised an alarm. Bandekar was asked to take care of the house by its owner Laxmi Umer who has gone to her native place in Kerala.
When Bandekar went to the house in the afternoon, he noticed the door open. However, when he entered the house, the accused tried to escape, but they could not make it far.
The youth, who were playing in the open space outside the house, nabbed Dharwadkar when he tried to flee from the site on his Bajaj Platinum motorcycle (GA-08-J-4887), while Rajput, who was waiting for his partner, landed in the hands of local panch Hemant Fadte and his friends. Both the accused were handed over to Vasco police.
Vasco police arrested the accused under Sections 454, 380, 511 r/w 134 of IPC and PSI Filomena Costa is investigating.
It may be recalled that in the last 48 hours, burglars have made their presence felt in Vasco by robbing a flat and two commercial establishments.
