As per the figures with the Water Resources Department (WRD), the storage capacity of Selaulim Dam reservoir in Sanguem Taluka is 234.36 cubic metres, however the water level had reached 234.65 cubic metres, due to which water started overflowing.
At the Anjunem irrigation project, the Chapoli, Amthane and Panchawadi tanks were filled to capacity and were overflowing.
Speaking to Herald, WRD Surveyor of Works Anant Bhagwat said that if water level crosses the storage capacity than the excess water is released into the river or if needed into the canals. “In Selaulim there is no need to release the water as the water overflows into the river. However in other dams, if the influx is more, then the excess water is released through gates, either into the rivers or if needed then into canals,” Bhagwat added.
Speaking further he said, “At the moment the department is calculating that the rainfall will be below average. But looking at the current scenario, I don’t think there is any possibility for any shortage in the coming days.”
The State has five major dams, of which Selaulim dam serves for domestic and industrial water supply in South Goa.
