Flooding, landslide in Mormugao
VASCO: Incessant heavy rains accompanied by high velocity winds created havoc in Mormugao on Friday. Many areas in Vasco city, Cansaulim, Zuari Nagar slums, Cortalim witnessed flood-like situation due to accumulation of rain water in these areas. Rain water also entered four houses at Zuari Nagar. Even an incident of landslide was reported at Vaddem in Vasco.
Several roads in the city of Vasco were half submerged in rainwater and the situation did not improved throughout the day with the administration was just a mute spectator.
“This was just one day of continuous rainfall and the gutters as well as storm water drains started overflowing like there was a flood in the area. What kind of pre-monsoon work was carried out is anyone’s guess,” said Anita Naik, a resident of Vasco.
The worst hit areas were the Municipal market and vegetable market.
Similarly there were reports of flood-like situation in Cansaulim, Velsao and Sancoale.
A landslide near Pai Hospital in Merces Vaddem was also reported.
Condemned tree falls on car near Margao church
MARGAO: A Gulmohar tree near the Holy Spirit Church in Margao came crashing down on Friday morning after strong winds blew into the area. The falling tree damaged a car parked nearby resulting in damages of 1.5lakh. Interestingly, the said tree was ordered to be cut down two weeks ago. A Fire and Emergency Services personnel was hurt while trying to cut a branch of the tree.
A Swift car (GA-08 K-9388) was damaged after the tree collapsed on it near Holy Spirit Church. Prasad Dessai, a fire personnel who was cutting a large branch of the fallen tree was injured when a piece of wood hit his forehead and caused a gash and profuse bleeding. Prasad was given six stitches on his forehead and is in Hospicio under observation.
Rains bring relief but worry abounds
CALANGUTE: The continuous downpour provided much relief to the farmers of coastal villages as the paddy fields were relatively dry for the last several days. With the heavy and continuous downpour the farmers were seen working in the paddy field till late in the evening. However, the continuous heavy rains could also spoil the crop.
“The rain was very much required for the growth of crops in the paddy fields but not to such an extent. The continuous downpour will not help the cause of the farmer but it may cause worries for the farmer,” said Francis a local farmer.
The continuous heavy showers flooded the main roads leading to Calangute-Candolim-Baga-Arpora and also opened up the dreaded pot holes. The tourists found it difficult to negotiate the roads.
