All in a day’s work: Electricity pole erected; cables removed from dying tree

PONDA: Following Herald’s report on the Electricity Department’s dangerous usage of a roadside tree to hold power cables in its Friday edition, the Department sprung into action and deployed workers to erect a pole to hold up the service wire connection supplying electricity to a building nearby.

On Friday, Electricity Department staff and machinery were seen working at the site. The team first dug a pit and erected an electricity pole. Using a crane, they then removed the supply wire tied to the dried-up branches of a tree and later connected it to the electricity pole.

It may recalled that the locals residing near St Anne’s Church in Ponda’s Upper Bazaar area had raised concerns over the shoddy cabling work done by the staff of the Electricity Department, and pointed out that two supply wires were suspended above the main road, and if the tree or branches collapsed, it could pose grave danger to road-users.

Viraj Sapre, a local social worker, said that he had brought the hazardous arrangement to the notice of the Electricity Department but did not receive any response. Sapre thanked Herald for highlighting the issue, as two trees had dried up due to the heat from the power cables that were tied to them.
