All in a day’s work: SGPDA fish market gets rare clean-up to impress Int’l Ministers attending SCO meet

MARGAO: In a feat that has never been achieved prior to this, the SGPDA wholesale market in Fatorda was scrubbed clean, the surrounding areas in Seraulim were cleaned as well and fish trucks and vendors who are usually conducting business in the vicinity were not to be seen either.

All this was done ahead of the two-day – Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) meeting of Foreign Ministers that begins on Thursday, May 4, for which the delegates will be transported via this road passing through Seraulim to reach a starred resort in Benaulim, where the event will take place.

However, this newfound tidiness left the public, be it residents or regular customers, shocked as they have been demanding such a thorough clean-up for years.

Even the footpath of the market was cleaned and the foul stench that was always a feature of the wholesale fish market was no longer there.

Furthermore, instead of the familiar sight of fish trucks arriving at the market at 3 am and then fish vendors starting their business in the market, the market was shut on Tuesday and labourers and water tankers were pressed into service at the wholesale market to wash the area and give it a fresh, clean look.

Locals have demanded that this level of cleanliness should be maintained throughout the year and not just for such events.
