PANJIM: The Goa government has claimed that all police stations are equipped with CCTV cameras. The statement that comes against the backdrop of Goa Human Rights Commission’s notice to the State and Goa Police seeking inquiry into compliance of the Supreme Court’s order on CCTV coverage across police stations.
“CCTVs are installed at all the police stations,” said Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant at a press conference on Wednesday.
A similar statement issued by Deputy Inspector General of Police (Range) Pankaj Kumar Singh states “Goa Police has already installed CCTV cameras at all police stations,” whereas Secretary IT Sanjay Kumar too claimed the same.
Herald’s news report mentioned of major police stations being covered under the CCTV even as it is reliably learnt that provision for storing the video and audio recording for at least 18 months is taking a little time. For now, the CCTVs have a storage capacity of 30 days. “The provision of storing the recordings is in the process,” said an official.
The COVID-19 pandemic and restrictions delayed importing of equipment for storage. “We are soon to get the facility,” he added. As per the SC, the video and audio recordings have to be retained for 18 months for evidence, if needed.
The government has to also comply with the internet connectivity and electricity backup.
