Alleged Assault and Overcharging by Parking Contractor Spark Outcry at New Mapusa Bus Stand

In a disturbing incident, a husband and wife were reportedly assaulted by a parking contractor at the recently inaugurated Mapusa bus stand on Friday. The altercation erupted over a dispute regarding parking fees, fueling local residents’ demands for government and Mapusa Municipality intervention.

The parking contractor is accused of mistreating tourists and imposing exorbitant fees. Allegations include consistent violations of regulations, with claims of overcharging individuals entering the bus stand.

Local activists are now urging the authorities to address the situation by either removing the collection agent or reconsidering the contracting party responsible for parking management. Salman Khan, a Mapusa resident, emphasized the need to halt the reported irregularities, mistakes, and bullying at the essential hub.

“This bus stand is an essential place for people who come from everywhere to shop, and they park their vehicles here; hence, they cannot be overcharged. The people who incite such behavior should be removed, or the contractor should be changed. I request the municipality to act on this,” said Salman Khan.

Another local resident recounted an incident where a parking attendant allegedly demanded Rs. 100 and justified the charge by stating that it applied to everyone, especially tourists.

The public outcry has intensified as residents and activists insist on a thorough investigation into the alleged assault and overcharging practices at the Mapusa bus stand.
