ALL’s IN THE WELL: Portuguese-era well turns into a garbage dumping site again

PANJIM: The Portuguese era well located adjacent to the compound wall of the Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church in Panjim, continues to be a ‘dump’ site even though the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) on Tuesday claimed that it had cleaned the well last week.

The well which was once used by the community and reportedly belongs to the City Corporation, is choked by water bottles, tetra packs, empty cigarettes and other trash. The water is contaminated and raising a stink.

People, particularly tourists who lack civic sense, dump trash in the well. Being uncovered, it becomes easier to dump trash in it. It also poses a threat to visitors of the Church, particularly children.

People who live within the vicinity of the Panjim Church have been raising this issue and have urged the local body to restore the Portuguese-era well to its former glory.

CCP Deputy Mayor Sanjeev Naik said, “Our workers had cleaned the well last week and if there is garbage now, then it must have been thrown by the people, who lack civic sense.”

Naik said that he will ask the CCP officials to carry out an inspection and take necessary steps to ensure that the well is cleaned again and maintained by the CCP workers.
