Alto Chicalim locals prevent truck from dumping garbage

VASCO: In their fight against letting the Panchayat spaces become mini Sonsoddo dumps, in the dark of the night at around 10.30 pm on Monday, the villagers intercepted a mini-truck dumping waste at Uttar Dongor at Alto Chicalim.
Rui Araujo, chairperson of Chicalim biodiversity management committee who was at the site, said, “I was passing by the site and was alerted by the nearby locals that a truck had moved at the Uttar Dongor with the intention of dumping unsegregated garbage in the open. So we reached the site and caught driver of the vehicle red handed while dumping mixed waste in the open.”
He further stated that the vehicle was stopped and locals were waiting for the police to arrive at the site when this report was filed.
Captain Viriato Fernandes, who was at the site, informed that there has to be a proper policy for garbage segregation and disposal. “Most of the places are comunidade land which is being used for garbage dumping which is incorrect,” said Fernandes.
“The main problem is that government authorities like PDA should stop allowing constructions of mega projects till a concrete policy for garbage management is finalised,” Fernandes added.
