MARGAO: Citizens in Margao are facing a perplexing situation with the post office operating in the Matanhy Saldanha Administrative Complex (South Goa District Collectorate Office). The office is named ‘Gandhi Market Complex’ inside the building, but is labelled ‘GMC post office’ on the exterior, leading to confusion among people, particularly senior citizens, who mistake it for a Goa Medical College (GMC) facility.
Shockingly, despite a complaint filed by Roland Martins of consumer rights NGO GOACAN, the postal department has failed to address the confusion and resolve the issue. It has now come to light that the post office operating in the Collectorate building was relocated from Gandhi Market, Margao, and was named Gandhi Market Complex (GMC), causing confusion among the public.
According to Martins, this post office lacks a letterbox, creating additional hardships for citizens who rely on postal services. “Firstly, the relocation of the post office from Gandhi Market to the Collectorate building has caused major inconvenience to the residents near Gandhi Market. Secondly, naming the post office as Gandhi Market Complex, and with the abbreviation GMC, is extremely misleading,” expressed Martins.
He highlighted that the sign posted outside the office is designed to deceive consumers, while the reality inside the post office is quite different. “There is no letterbox outside the post office to deposit letters, resulting in numerous people suffering due to the postal department’s insensitivity,” claimed Martins.
Despite filing a complaint requesting a name change and the installation of a letterbox outside the post office, the postal department has failed to address the matter. In response, Martins plans to address the Post Master General (PMG) through a letter campaign starting on June 18, coinciding with Goa Revolution Day.
