Amid COVID concerns, EC rationalises polling booths

Nearly 35 more booths in South Goa

MARGAO: In wake of COVID-19 pandemic, the Election Commission of Goa on Friday decided to rationalise the polling booths for the upcoming Assembly elections, and hence all the polling booths will be limited to 1,000 voters.

There will be nearly 35 more polling booths in South Goa. 

The team of Election Commission Goa held a meeting with representatives of all political parties at South Goa District Collectorate Office, here. 

 Navin Pai Raikar of BJP, Altinho Gomes for Congress, and Durgadas Kamat on behalf of Goa Forward Party, besides others, attended the meeting. District Collector Ruchika Katyal and Sanjit Rodrigues chaired the meeting. 

In the meeting, it was explained to the representatives of political parties about the rationalisation of polling booths for the upcoming Assembly elections. They have been informed about the numbers of voters in each polling booths, which will be limited not beyond 1,000 voters. 

The Election Commission decided to increase the polling booth two each in Ponda, Margao, Curtorim, and Canacona. Eight polling booths have been added in Vasco, four in Dabolim, three each in Cuncolim and Navelim. Sanvordem Constituency will have four more polling booths and one each in Velim, Quepem, Fatorda and Mormugao. 

The Election Commission has decided to follow all the COVID-19 safety norms for the upcoming Assembly elections. 

Addressing the media persons, Raikar said, “The Election Commission has decided to limit the polling booths within 1,000 voters, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Two more polling booths have been added in Margao Constituency. All the booths will be limited to 1000 votes, which is a good exercise. The names of many voters have been shifted and added.”
