MARGAO: Exactly opposite to what the people from Merces to Mormugao raising their voices pertaining to the irregular water supply, in Benaulim thousands of litres of water are getting wasted since December 2021 due to leakage in the pipeline. The concerned department is blind eye towards the issue, despite locals demanding its repair.
On Tuesday Herald visited the site at Benaulim, near the Maria Hall upon the request of the locals, and it was witnessed that thousands of litres are flowing out of the broken pipe, which is learnt to be daily phenomena.
Locals also brought to the notice that they had filed a complaint before the Public Works Department (PWD) last December, but no concrete measures were taken to check the waste of water.
It is pertinent to note that that many parts of the State are reeling under severe irregular water supply. People from Merces, Chimbel, Santa Cruz village panchayats and other areas are urging the concerned department by submitting memorandum to the officials over irregular water issues.
New PWD Minister Nilesh Cabral is on the record that at the present moment it is not possible to give 24X7 water supplies to the people of Goa.
Speaking to Herald, Rosario Barretto, local from Benaulim said this leakage of water has been noticed since December, 2021.
“The officials of the concerned department gave excuses of damage to the valve, but shockingly they failed to repair it till date. They have just dumped some mud over it, which is not a solution,” said Barretto.
He further said that water gets wasted over here during the night time on a large scale.
“We cannot calculate how much water has been wasted over here for the last three months,” said Barretto.
He lambasted the concerned department for ignoring the issue, and that too at the time when several people from the state are struggling to get the regular supply of drinking water.
Ahamad Aslam, a fruit vendor, also informed that this has also resulted in major traffic problems, as the damaged pipeline is very close to the road.
