Anganwadi at Opa-Khandepar cries for attention

Students forced to go out into the open area to answer nature’s call as reptiles enter the toilet through cracked walls; building not repaired despite repeated demands from parents

PONDA: It’s been one year since the locals and media had brought to the notice of government about the huge cracks to the toilet of anganwadi at Opa-Khandepar.

However, the government is yet to find out the ‘muhuraat’ for repairs of the toilet.

The anganwadi toilet is in a pathetic state. Due to fear of reptiles appearing from the cracked walls, the toilet has been closed. Thus students are forced to go out into the open area to answer nature’s call.

Sandeep Parkar, social activist, said it is risky to send students out into the open during monsoon to answer nature’s call.

He demanded immediate repair of the toilet. Due to the neglect, parents are asking whether this anganwadi is for students or for reptiles?

It may be recalled that last year Sandeep Parkar along with parents had protested against cracked toilet walls, falling ceiling, broken stairs etc at this anganwadi. Besides this, the foundation of the toilet had also caved in and on the verge of collapse. The locals had demanded urgent government’s intervention.

Sandeep said, “Following this an estimate was prepared by the government in January 2023 to repair the toilet and the building, but so far nothing happened.”

It is learnt that there are 20 students who attend the anganwadi. The parents said they fear sending their children to this angandwadi due to the worst condition of the toilet and the unwanted guests – reptiles.

Three to four times, reptiles entered anganwadi through the toilet, causing panic among students, said parents. The anganwadi was constructed in 2009 and was inaugurated in 2011.
