CALANGUTE: The heavy showers that lashed the State on Tuesday threw normal life out of gear in the coastal village of Calangute.

The showers left people returning home from work stranded for hours. The roads along the streets of Calangute were flooded making it rather difficult for pedestrians to walk. There was an added risk as incomplete cabling work undertaken by the Electricity Department meant open pits not visible as they were inundated. The failure of power supply also compounded the miseries of the villagers.

“It’s high time the work of underground cabling is expedited or it may pose serious threat to people and motorists. We have earlier been facing problems due to flooding during monsoons, but digging of the roads to lay electricity cables which are lying exposed could pose a serious problem, especially at nights,” said a villager.

At Arpora market, the situation was no different with traffic jams causing inconvenience.

When the matter was brought to the attention of Calangute MLA Michael Lobo, he assured to write to the authorities to carry out the works on priority basis.
