According to reports, the incident took place as Amrut Singh, Hanumant Parab and Vassudev Zarekar, were returning from Belgaum to Goa in a car late Thursday evening.
As they reached near the Goa border at Zamblikade, Chorla Ghat, at about 8.30 pm, some unknown persons travelling in another car intercepted the animal welfare activists and forced them to stop their vehicle.
The accused then attacked Singh, Parab and Zarekar with bamboo sticks, inflicting head injuries on Singh, while Parab and Zarekar sustained minor injures.
The accused also damaged the car, before fleeing from the site.
Passers by later moved the three injured persons to the Sanquelim PHC and while Parab and Zarekar were discharged after medical treatment, Singh was later referred to the Goa Medical College and Hospital at Bambolim.
Acting on a police complaint, the Valpoi police went to the Sanquelim hospital and recorded the statements of the injured persons, as investigations are in progress.
