Animal rights advocates call for ending cruelty to poultry

CANACONA:  With most of the broiler suppliers from the neighbouring States subjecting the fowls to the cruel practice of transporting the birds confined in battery cages and other forms of cruelty, the animal rights advocates are raising serious questions over nil implementation of existing laws by law enforcement agencies in Goa.
To maximize profits the rules and regulations in place are floated more often than not, say the activists who are against the cruelty these fowls are subjected to during transit.
“The existing legal framework governing the transport of animals and for that matter poultry birds is adequate and should be implemented to ensure that unnecessary pain and suffering is not inflicted on them during transit,” pointed out Denis Fernandes who is a known animal enthusiast from Canacona.
Fernandes added that Article 51 (A) of the Constitution enjoins Indian citizens to have compassion for living creatures.
Manoj Prabhugaonkar another animal sympathizer from Canacona said that it is high time that we start acknowledging that these birds are living beings and deserve to live and die in dignity.
