Anjuna Caisua locals protest PWD’s failure to supply regular water

Block main road leading to Vagator Beach

MAPUSA: Anjuna Caisua residents on Wednesday blocked the main road leading to the Vagator Beach protesting the failure of PWD to supply them with regular water.

The residents blocked the road with a rope and the empty vessels during the demonstration. The locals questioned the authorities why only they have to suffer when all other villages receive regular water supply. The protest, which commenced in the morning, continued till late afternoon with the locals confronting the PWD EE.

They complained of not receiving a single drop of water for the past one month. The EE tried to explain to the angry residents that since Anjuna is at the tail point, due to low pressure, the water supply does not reach their area.

However, the PWD official said a new 5MLD storage tank in Siolim will solve the problem. Not satisfied with the EE’s reply, the locals demanded an immediate solution to the problem.

The locals said clean drinking water is their fundamental right and alleged that water is diverted to the hotels and the residents are made to suffer.

On 16,000 litres of free water, the locals said they do not want free water but regular supply.  “Free water is just an election stunt. The ground reality is that there is no water but the people are still paying for it,” they claimed.

The residents accused the panchayat of issuing unlimited connections to hoteliers.

Meanwhile, Anjuna Caisua sarpanch said the panchayat has already passed a resolution not to issue any more connections.
