Anjuna Independence Day raves: Law in a trance as law breakers dance

Clubs that are officially ‘sealed’ by Pollution Control Board are partying on as if there’s no tomorrow

Mapusa: Loud music continued unabated on Friday night in the coastal belt of Anjuna, despite clear directions of the High Court that no loud music will be allowed after 10 pm.

Meanwhile, Cops ignore rave party challenges and only issued challans by the roadside.

The Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) had directed the sealing of Hayati Beach Club, Café La Musica, Dubki Beach Club, Banana Forest Bar and Restaurant and Mayan Beach Club in May this year for operating without a valid consent of the Board as required under the Water and Air Act.

The Board in a letter had asked the Superintendent of Police and the Anjuna Police to ensure that the units remained sealed and no events are held, and directed them to submit an action taken report.

However, three of the clubs ordered to be sealed announced Trance parties in the run-up to the Independence Day weekend revelry.

Shockingly, in complete violation of the GSPCB direction, Hayati and Dubki beach clubs held Trance parties and played blasting music throughout Friday night. There were also several other venues holding Rave parties.

The Anjuna police, however, literally turned a deaf ear to the deafening music and instead only stood by the roadsides and challaned tourists visiting party venues.

When O Heraldo contacted, the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) Chairman Mahesh Patil said that he has directed the North Goa Collector to ensure that the five premises which were sealed for not following the consent rules are not de-sealed.

“We have learnt from newspapers and even received complaints that parties have been advertised at the closed venues. We have directed the Collector to seal the premises as they have the police under them. Our team is investigating the issue,” Patil said.

When contacted Anjuna PI, Prashal Dessai said, “Some premises are indoor clubs and hence there is no time limit for them to play music, while for the outdoor parties, the deadline is 10 pm.”
