Anjuna locals yearn for peace as music blasts all weekend

ANJUNA: The locals of Anjuna and the surrounding coastal villages have begun to dread the weekends – the only time they get to spend at home, with their families – thanks to the noise from the all-night parties hosted by clubs and on the touristy beach belt.

Loud music, way beyond the permissible limits set by the Goa State Pollution Control Board continues to make residents miserable, especially those living along the once-pristine, peaceful Vagator stretch.

Rave parties blasting psy and trance music which commenced on Saturday evening continued till Sunday morning, with videos of people dancing on the beach even at dawn circulatinh on social media. Several posters were seen online, advertising DJs and international acts scheduled to play throughout the night. In spite of the High Court repeatedly passing orders pertaining to PIL 7/2021 and contempt petition 14/2022 filed by locals who are miserable due to the nuisance, noise pollution rules continue to be flouted with impunity not only at Dream Beach, but also by other restaurants in Anjuna.

Locals who live near Anjuna Police station said they could hear the music from these parties held in nightclubs located three kilometres away, like Hilltop, Salud, Raeeth, Banana Forest , Levels, Occo, Omera, Jungle Origins, Romeo Lane, and House of Chapora, to name a few. “The parties that started on Saturday evening continued till Sunday morning. The situation was the same on Sunday night; this is a menace to people living in the area,” said Desmond Alvares, former member of the Anjuna Noise Pollution committee.

Alvares said that he even submitted a written complaint to the Anjuna police on Sunday night, requesting them to stop the music, however there was no action taken, he claimed.
