Anjuna panchayat strongly opposes ‘Sunburn’ on New Year’s Eve

ANJUNA: Close on the heels of the Chief Minster’s assurance that the Sunburn EDM festival will not be held on December 31, if there are objections from the people, the Anjuna Panchayat has strongly opposed extending the Sunburn to its scheduled fourth day, December 31, on account the absolute traffic and other chaos that is inevitable due to a footfall of close to 3 lakhs people

Laxmidas Chimulkar, Sarpanch of Anjuna, conveyed the mood of the villagers, citing assurances from the government that Sunburn won’t occur on December 31.

“The Chief Minister and the MLA have affirmed that the event won’t be held on December 31. The opposition to this event was clear from the beginning, supported by the entire panchayat body. We remain committed to pursuing this matter further,” remarked Chimulkar.

The annual Sunburn electronic dance music (EDM) festival, slated to span four days from December 28 to 31 at Vagator, faced a wave of dissent, primarily concerning its extension to include the last day of the year. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant confirmed that Sunburn won’t be conducted on December 31.

The people of Anjuna strongly opposed the proposed Sunburn EDM festival slated for December 31, citing worries about traffic congestion and negative impacts on local businesses. Organizers initially planned a four-day event, which raised concerns among villagers who were used to the festival lasting only three days.

Residents were particularly unhappy about the extended duration, as Sunburn had historically been a three-day affair for many years. Locals highlighted potential traffic disruptions and disturbances to local celebrations that could occur by hosting the festival on New Year’s Eve. Interestingly, the tickets for December 31 are still being sold.

OPINION

With CM’s firm assurance of no Sunburn on Dec 31, there should be no worry at all

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has not once but twice assured that the Sunburn festival will not be held on December 31 if and when there are such strong (and genuine) objections from the people.

While Sunburn continues to sell tickets for December 31, the people of Goa know that the government will ultimately not go against the wishes of the people and the promises that the Chief Minister has made to them.
