MAPUSA: To tackle the garbage problem in Anjuna-Caisua, the panchayat had convened a meeting with representatives of Saligao Treatment Plant and Goa Waste Management committee, on Friday.
At the meeting, some panchayat members informed the representatives of Saligao Treatment Plant and Goa Waste Management committee that despite having a garbage contractor in place, the village was not kept clean and that they were receiving many complaints from people.
Agreeing that the garbage is a major issue which needs to be tackled on urgently, Sarpanch Patrick Savio Almeida informed that the panchayat has signed a one-year contract with a local for collecting garbage. The contactor, the sarpanch informed, has already received 50 medium dustbins which he would placed in open places. The contractor has also received 3400 small dustbins, which he would distribute to the people — two each for a household for wet and dry garbage.
At the meeting, all the 11 ward members agreed to supervise their own wards.
The contractor said that the household wet garbage would be collected on daily, while the dry garbage would be collected twice a week. The contractor also informed that garbage from open areas will be collected after 2 pm and during the door-to-door collection, garbage from roadside will be also collected simultaneously.
It was also decided that only green and black dustbin will be used for garbage collection and not blue. The meeting also decided to place eight dustbins in each ward. The panchayat members have also decided that each ward member along with contactor would visit all 11 wards to educate people on tackling garbage.
The panchas instructed the contractor to provide safety equipments to labourers and maintain hygiene by covering garbage carrying vehicle.
The panchayat has decided to furnish the personal details of the contractor and his labourers to the Anjuna police for security clearance.
