Speaking exclusively to Herald, the JE of Anjunem Dam, Powadi, informed that only a part of the dam was under repair. He said, “This is the second major repair work since the dam was constructed in 1986. The first was done in 1997 after some seepage was noticed.”
A team of Dam Safety Canal (DCS) members had recently visited the Anjunem dam and recommended repairs after spotting a leak. The dam authorities released around 650 hectare meter of water to carry out the repairs. They stressed the dam was still strong and there was no reason to worry or panic.
“The repairs are being done on the directions of the Dam Safety Canal (DSC), which were made at a meeting on May 20. During the inspection, it was found that there was some leakage in the dam and this was the right time to carry out such repairs. After the meeting we decided to immediately do the necessary repairs,” said Powadi.
He continued, “Presently, the work is carried out at two places in the inner side of the dam. The work is being done on a war footing, with the workers working nearly 24 hours a day. We are hopeful that the repair work will be completed in the next four to five days.”
Constructed in 1986, the Anjunem Irrigation Project is located at Anjunem, Sattari on a tributary of Valvanti river under Mhadei basin. The dam has four gates and supplies water for irrigation and to the Padosem water treatment plant. It was constructed after shifting five villages from the area.
