Anjunem dam reaches full capacity, discharge of excessive water begins

VALPOI: The Anjunem dam has reached its maximum capacity, prompting the authorities to open all four gates of the dam at around 11 am on Wednesday to discharge the excess water. Sattari taluka, where the dam is located, has been experiencing heavy rainfall over the past two weeks, adding to the water levels in the dam. As a result, the water level in the dam reached 91 meters, leading the officials to take a decision to release water.

The incessant rains over the last eight days have caused a significant increase in water storage within the dam, filling it to its brim. To manage the situation effectively, officials have been appointed to monitor the dam’s operations round-the-clock. While some gates may be closed in the coming days if required, currently, all gates need to remain open due to the present scenario, according to the dam’s assistant engineer, Dilip Gaonkar. A similar situation occurred last year when gates were opened on August 8 and 9.

As a precautionary measure, locals residing near the Valvanti and Kashti rivers have been alerted in advance about the discharge of excessive water. Notices have been posted in the respective panchayat areas to ensure people are aware of the situation.
