VALPOI: With State witnessing a dry spell, the water level in the Anjunem dam has receded, which is four centimetres less when compared to last year.
At present the dam needs another seven centimetres of water to reach its full capacity. A noted environmentalist has raised concerns that if the prevailing dry spell continues till October then there are chances of most parts facing the water shortage problem in future.
Compared to last year, this year the rainfall is almost 17 percent less.
“The evaporation rate is increasing now. Most rivulets in Sattari taluka have run dry. So in comings days, we will face acute water shortage problem,” warned Rajendra Kerkar, a renowned environmentalist.
When contacted, G F Pawadi, Assistant Engineer, Water Resources Department, Keri Sattari said, “The present water level of Anjunem dam is sufficient. If the dam does not reach its full capacity, it will not affect us. If there is no rainfall in October, then we will control the release of water.”
