Another Anjuna panch arrested in extortion case

PANJIM: The Anti Corruption Branch (ACB) made a second arrest in the extortion case that has brought under scanner the functioning of Anjuna panchayat. Panch Surendra Govekar has been arrested while third accused is on the run. 

The ACB on Saturday caught Hanumant Govekar red-handed while allegedly accepting part of the extortion amount from a complainant businessman. 

“Surendra Govekar of Anjuna Panchayat arrested by ACB. Both Surendra and Hanumant are remanded to five days police custody for interrogation and another panch is absconding. Search to trace her whereabouts is on,” reads a police press statement. 

The ACB had booked three members of the panchayat following complaint from businessman Samar Merchant alleging that Surendra Govekar, Hanumant Govekar and another panch and have been demanding extortion amount from him. A trap was laid resulting in the arrest of Hanumant.
