Another COVID patient dies of black fungus at GMC

Total number of deaths increases to two

PANJIM: One more COVID-19 patient, who was undergoing treatment for Mucormycosis or black fungus succumbed to the infection in the Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC), Bambolim, on Tuesday. With this, the total number of deaths rose to two.  

Health Minister Vishwajit Rane said that of the 10 patients affected by black fungus, two succumbed to the dreaded disease while others are undergoing treatment in the GMC. 

When it was brought to his notice that there were 12 patients of black fungus in the State as per the date released by Government of India, Rane clarified that till date only 10 cases have been detected in the State.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said that a Special Ward 102 has been set up in the GMC to treat the patients with black fungus and a team of specialists from Ophthalmology, ENT, Skin and Medicine are actively working in coordination with the team from All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi to provide best medical treatment to these patients. 

“The best part of black fungus is that it is not a transmissible disease,” he said. 

The Chief Minister also informed that the patients may have black fungus but they died of COVID-19 infections. It is all complications afterwards.
