PANJIM: Goa’s COVID-19 tally breached the 19,000-mark on Thursday as the State touched a new high with the highest single-day spike of 713 cases. For the third consecutive day, the State saw the highest number of persons getting infected by the virus.
The first three days of September set a record by adding up 1,937 new patients to the COVID tally, while there were 20 who succumbed to the virus. In the last few days, post Ganesh Chaturthi, the State has witnessed a continuous spike in coronavirus cases with close to 5,000 people getting infected.
On August 24, a day after Ganesh festival, the number of new cases were 139, bust after that saw a continuous surge and shot up to 713 new cases on Thursday, the highest since May 13, when the first case was reported post Goa was declared as ‘COVID-free’.
It was in March that the first COVID case was detected in the State and later in mid-April it was categorized under Green Zone for no new cases.
The State’s previous biggest single-day jump was on September 2 that had recorded 636 new coronavirus patients; while September 1 had reported 588 cases. With 713 new cases, State’s total confirmed cases reached 19,355 while the active patients’ number stood at 4,782.
In the last 48 hours there have been eight deaths, taking the total mortality count to 212. Further, with 302
recoveries, as many as 14,361 patients are declared cured since January 29.
As per the bulletin issued by Directorate of Health Services (DHS), of the 2,657 samples tested on Thursday, 713 were positive while 1,578 were negative. The reports of 366 samples are awaited. Till date, the State has conducted 2,06,760 tests.
A 38-year-old man from Navelim, a 47-year-old man from Curca-Bambolim, a 79-year-old woman from Mapusa, all admitted in Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC) with co-morbid conditions and an 80-year-old man from Sankhali and a 72-year-old from Gogol, admitted at ESI hospital were declared dead on Wednesday
On Thursday, a 70-year-old male from Margao, a 75-year-old man from Navelim, admitted in GMC and a 65-year-old man from Zuarinagar-Vasco, admitted at ESI Hospital succumbed to the virus.
There are around 147 patients in hospital isolation while 449 opted for home isolation.
Panjim saw a surge with 42 cases reported in a single day. For the last one month, the State capital is reporting cases on daily basis. Panjim’s active case tally stands at 224.
