Another ladli attempts suicide, battling for life

MARGAO: Just as Quepem was recovering from the death of Vanita Gaonkar, yet another case of alleged cruelty by in-laws of a woman from Quepem has come to light. The Quepem police, on Thursday evening, registered a complaint against several members of a family from Xeldem after the daughter-in-law of the family attempted suicide by drenching herself with turpentine and setting herself on fire. 
The woman has suffered 80 percent burn injuries and is presently fighting for her life at the Goa Medical College Hospital, Bambolim. Following a complaint of the family of the woman, the Quepem police have registered a case under Section 498-A read with 34 of IPC for cruelty by husband and in-laws. 
The District Magistrate of Quepem had headed to the GMC on Friday for recording of the declaration of the victim but it was told that she was unfit for the same. 
The complaint says that the alleged accused with their common intention subjected complainant’s daughter to cruelty after her marriage due to which she attempted to commit suicide by pouring turpentine and setting herself on fire.
The Quepem police will make one more attempt of recording of statement of the victim on Saturday. 
Herald had strongly taken up the case of Vanita Gaonkar’s death earlier and had forced the police to make arrests.
