PANJIM: While the courts have directed states to curb roadside religious structures, a roadside tree which bears an uncanny resemblance to that of an elephant could well turn into a roadside shrine at Surla.
Located about 5 kms away from Mollem, travelers proceeding towards Surla have been drawn to the unusual tree, which resembles an elephant’s head.
The tree, which is located by the roadside, is now in the process of being covered with laterite stones, in an alleged bid to turn the unusual tree into a roadside shrine.
“What concerns us is that while efforts are being made to protect this tree under the pretext of religious sentiments, other trees in close proximity could well be felled to make way for a roadside shrine,” feared a nature lover, who is a regular traveler along the route.
