MARGAO: In an interesting development, the anti-Arthur faction within the ruling group has decided to back opposition backed candidate for the vacant post of Margao Municipal vice-chairperson.
Hours after the Digambar-Vijai combine announced on Saturday morning that the nine-member opposition group would contest the Vice-Chairperson’s post, the anti-Arthur faction within the ruling camp resolved to support the opposition backed candidate for the post. “
All the six out of the 11 ruling Councillors met in the city late Saturday evening and decided to back the candidature of Berta Cardozo,” Pratima said on Sunday, adding that the group would fully support Berta’s candidature for the vacant post.
The outgoing vice-Chairperson, who had quit office as per an agreement between the ruling group said that time has come for Arthur to step down and make an honourable exit as per the agreement.
MMC Chairperson Arthur D’Silva had announced on Thursday that his group would field Councilor Dadi Mayenkar for the post.
The last day for filing of nomination papers is Monday noon. The elections for the post will be held on April 2.
Though elections for the Municipal vice-Chairperson are always considered insignificant in the political scheme of things, the polls have come as a medium for the both the Arthur group and his detractors to show majority support in the number game.
Elections for the vice-chairperson’s post were necessitated following the resignation of Pratima Coutinho.
