Anti-encroachment drive in Margao this week

MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council is finally bracing up to take up an anti-encroachment drive in the city markets and roadsides from this week.Following an order from the Chief Officer, Naveen S L, market inspectors have fanned out to the two municipal markets – New Market and the Gandhi market, to warn the erring traders and vendors to clear the encroachments voluntarily before the official axe falls on the illegal structures.A team of market inspectors made their presence felt in the New Market on Sunday and got some extensions removed which were found on the passages. The traders have been told to remove the kiosks from the roadsides which were earlier cleared as per the High Court directions.
Sources in the know said that the civic babus have also taken cognisance of readymade garments sellers in the city encroaching on the passages with their items.
“The chief officer has taken serious note of the garments shops keeping their items out for display. All these items will be lifted away once the encroachment drives gets underway,” informed an official.
Sources, however, demanded to know whether the new chief officer will clear the encroachments in and around the Santas Almas Chapel, which has been continuously ignored by successive chief officers and municipal chairpersons.
