VASCO: Anti-encroachment drives in market, renovation of municipality building issues dominated the Mormugao Municipal Council meeting, on Friday.

MMC Chairperson Damodar Kaskar assured to have a meeting with the contractor and other officials to implement necessary changes in the renovation of municipality building.

In the council meeting, there was prolonged discussion on the issues such as market encroachments by the vegetable vendors and to have a drive to clear it. There was also a discussion on the renovation of municipality building, wherein one councillor said that the aesthetic of heritage building must be restored and not be completely renovated.

Councillor Girish Borkar reiterated that the traditional Goan vendors, who are doing business outside in the sun and in rain, to be shifted to the old renovated market complex.

Chairperson Kaskar revealed that the old renovated market place is having some unfinished work related to electricity and drainage. Once the work is completed, shortly the traditional vendors will be shifted in the renovated market structure.

Borker said, “There are anti-encroachment drives happening in the Vasco market conducted by the Market Committee, but how come the committee is getting tough selectively and turns a blind eye on the few.”

When questioned about the allegations made by the councillor on partiality in anti-encroachment drives in the Vasco market, Kaskar assured henceforth no such partiality will happen and all those who are doing encroachments in the market, strict action will be taken against them.

Meanwhile, Councillor Shami Salkar raised the issue of renovation of the Portuguese era heritage municipality building.

She pointed out that the heritage building could be restored by using the traditional and prescribed methods by experts. Heritage structures just cannot be renovated like any other buildings by putting tin sheets on the roof and spoiling its looks.

She made a demand that the consultant of the renovation of MMC building be questioned on this.

Responding to this, Chairperson Kaskar stated the administrator appointed the contractor before the new council was formed and assured to have a meeting with the contractor and other officials and direct them to make the necessary changes.
