Anti-marina group threatens to move court over public hearing

Wants govt to immediately cancel or postpone the scheduled hearing on November 2

PANJIM: The opponents of Marina project on Wednesday stated that they are exploring the possibility of approaching the Court for an order to cancel or postpone the scheduled public hearing on November 2, on the proposed marina project at Nauxi, in the event that the government fails to meet their demands same.
Addressing media persons, Goenkar Against Marina member Ramarao Wagh said that they have already put forth their demand for the cancellation or postponement of public hearing before Chief Minister Pramod Sawant.
“We are waiting for Chief Minister’s positive response. If the government fails to take any step in that direction, we are open to approaching the Court with a plea to stop the hearing on technical grounds,” Wagh said.
He said that the Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) report, on which the public hearing has been planned, itself is a fraud document as it has failed to point out the ecology of the area. “The EIA report is a fraud and we want it a new report to be drafted with help of National Institute of Oceanography (NIO),” Wagh demanded.
The delegation of MLAs and villagers from Curca, Bambolim, Talaulim on Tuesday had called on the Chief Minister and demanded that the scheduled public hearing on the proposed AHOY Marina project be postponed pending the finalisation of the Coastal Zone Management Plan (CZMP) of the State.
Activist Rama Kankonkar said that on Thursday the opponents will hold a meeting to decide on their future course of action if the government fails to cancel the hearing immediately. “We will either go for a public meeting or rally or we will approach the Court for justice,” he said.
“We will take every step to ensure that the public hearing is cancelled,” he stated.
