PANJIM: Edson Gonsalves, the second person to be detained and released in the Swapnil Walke murder case, has moved the local court in Margao for anticipatory bail. The Crime Branch (CB) sleuths have decided to not oppose the plea as his role in the brutal murder of the jeweller has not been established as yet.

“The investigation team will not oppose the anticipatory bail application of Edson. His role in the present crime is not ascertained in the ongoing investigation so far; although he is an active member of the group three of whom are involved in the Walke murder case,” an official said.

The application is likely to be heard in the court next week.

Edson was released soon after questioning by the Margao and Panjim Police, following a crackdown on the criminals involved in the crime.

While Omkar Patil, who was the first to be picked by the CB on September 3, was arrested by the Margao Police; Edson was released. The case was thereafter handed over to the CB.

Accused Evender Rodrigues was arrested thereafter while Mustafa Sheikh had surrendered before the police. With Omkar, Evender and Mustafa’s 10-day remand period ending on Sunday; sources said the CB will seek their further custody before the magistrate on the following day.

Director General of Police Mukesh Kumar Meena has claimed that the murder was a case of failed armed robbery attempt.
