Apologise for remark on Archbishop, Youth Cong tells Sawaikar

PANJIM: The Goa Pradesh Youth Congress Committee on Tuesday demanded an apology from former BJP MP Narendra Sawaikar for his statement against Goa Archbishop for his stand against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

The Congress workers, who had protested near its head office in Panjim, also demanded that the MLAs from minority community, who have joined BJP, should resign en-mass and re-contest on the saffron party ticket.

Sawaikar had last week hit out at Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrao for criticising CAA and National Register of Citizens (NRC) and advised the Church-run educational institutions not to claim benefits of taxpayers’ money and minority status.

The Archbishop had urged the Central government to repeal the CAA and desist from implementing the NRC and the National Population Register (NPR).

Addressing media persons on Tuesday, GPYCC President Varad Mardolkar said that Sawaikar through his statements has insulted minority community of the State.

“He has stooped down to the lowest level to defend the wrong step of passing CAA taken by his government,” he argued.

Congress’s minority cell in-charge Urfan Mulla said that minority community MLAs who left the Congress to join BJP should resign and get re-elected on BJP ticket.
