MARGAO: Aam Aadmi Party (APP) hinted that 40 per cent of its candidates for the next Assembly elections in Goa would be women and urged them to come forward to take up responsibilities so that their caliber can be seen and fittingly rewarded.
AAP Goa Convener and South Goa candidate for the Lok Sabha elections Elvis Gomes made this announcement during an interaction he had with women in Margao on Saturday that was attended by an impressive number of women from the district.
During the question hour session one woman asked why women were not given sufficient representation in tickets as both the candidates proposed for the Lok Sabha elections were males and that is when Elvis made the announcement.
Replying to another question on job opportunities, Gomes said instead of making lofty promises on creating jobs his party would prefer to concentrate on entrepreneurship coaching so that people can launch their own business and be independent income generators.
When some women pointed out that women are projected negatively or as sex objects in different advertisements about Goa, AAP replied that brand Goa itself sells and advertisements in no way bring in tourists.
“AAP can assure you that we shall not permit any advertisements that show women in a cheap or vulgar manner,” he said adding that they would strongly oppose trance parties and casino promotion for tourists.
Responding to another question on safety for women, he said AAP would have a functioning Women’s commission in South Goa besides strengthening and increasing the number of women police stations in the State.
Earlier, speaking to those gathered, Elvis pointed out how AAP government has revolutionised public health and public education in Delhi that even a developed nation like USA wants to learn from it. “It was a matter of pride that 250 students of Delhi public schools were now studying in IITs in the country,” he said.
Pointing out that some schools have swimming pools, he said one school as an international standard hockey ground with astro turf which even the private schools do not offer. He further pointed out that in the last three years, the Delhi budget has doubled to Rs 60,000 crore.
“While we are made to stand in queues in Goa, the Delhi government offers home service for 70 different services where the public servant will come to the house to collect the necessary document and photographs and also deliver the service,” he said urging people to vote for AAP at the ensuing elections.
