MARGAO: The Green Goa Foundation (GGF) has urged the govt to take a serious note of the killing of the tigers and get a competent and honest officer to investigate the offence, and secure conviction of the accused.
In a press note issued here, the GGF said that it is considering filing a petition before the National Green Tribunal in view of constant violations of the Forests and other Environmental Laws in Goa.
The GGF has expressed shock at the “well planned” poisoning of four tigers in the Mhadei Sanctuary.
“Such killing is just not possible without the active connivance of the forest officials. The tiger is the National animal of the country and it is unpatriotic to kill our national animal,” GGF said in the press note.
“The state reacts quickly when a cow is killed, but is completely negligent when endangered species like the tigers are killed,” Raison Almeida of GGF said.
The GGF said that it suspect that the accused are connected with the ruling party and that they would soon be released on bail and a defective charge-sheet would be filed to facilitate their acquittal.
“It is common knowledge that local leaders are opposed to classification of land as Tiger Reserve and therefore are killing wild animals with impunity,” GGF pointed out.
