PANJIM: Centre of India Trade Union (CITU) has termed the State government order allowing closure of Aprant Iron and Steel Plant in Costi village in Sanguem as “illegal” and has demanded immediate commencement of the plant.
The company’s plant, which was shut down since the last 10 months due to suspension of mining activities and non availability of coal, has directly or indirectly affected the livelihood of around 5,000 families, dependent on the plant, the trade union has claimed.
Speaking to media persons, CITU State president Anand Betkikar said that if the company cannot start the plant then the entire plant site should be vacated by handing it over to the local village panchayat for setting up some alternative project which would ensure livelihood for the villagers.
