MARGAO: People from Aquem Baixo opposed the order of the High Court asking MMC to utilise GSUDA land in their village for storing Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) from Sonsoddo dump remediation.
The protestors who gathered at the land opposite railway station said that the land is being tilled by them for generations and they don’t want to give it for storing garbage.
People fear that the temporary arrangement, if allowed, would become permanent garbage dump. People also claim that the land acquisition has lapsed by virtue of certain sections of Land Acquisition Act after the land was left unused by the GSUDA.
Following the High Court order directing it to use the land for the storing of rejects and inert from the old dump remediation, the MMC has started fencing 5000 sq mts of land of the 23,000 sq mts of land of GSUDA. The people of Aquem Baixo opposed to the same on Tuesday.
The protestors who were mostly farmers said that this is some of the very few farming lands that have survived in the city and is the only source of their livelihood.
