PANJIM: The High Court of Bombay at Goa on Wednesday directed the Arambol Sarpanch and the Panchayat Secretary to remain present in the Court either themselves or through their authorised counsel on June 19, following complaint of dumping of non-biodegradable waste in open and in non-designated areas.
During the hearing of suo motu writ petition, the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) pointed out to reports, prima facie, indicating dumping of non-biodegradable waste in open and in non-designated areas by the Arambol Village panchayat. The Court asked the GSPCB to immediately take necessary action by visiting the sites and to ensure that the panchayat stops the hazardous activity.
The GSPCB was also asked to immediately issue notice to Arambol panchayat so that its Sarpanch, Panchayat Secretary and other officials remain present for the inspection. The Panchayat has also been asked to file an affidavit of compliance by June 19.

On the other hand, Bhati Sarpanch Chandrakant Gaonkar assured to deposit penalty of Rs three lakh for not complying with the Court directions to set up MRF and to file an affidavit-cum-undertaking by June 20.
