SANGUEM: Archana Ankush Gaonkar was elected unopposed as chairperson of Sanguem Municipal Council on Wednesday.
The post fell vacant after outgoing chairperson Priti Naik had resigned in accordance with the mutual understanding between other councillors. Sanguem deputy collector Milindra Velip presided over the meeting as electoral officer and was assisted by municipal chief officer Gaurav Gaonkar.
Velip declared Gaonkar as the unopposed chairperson as she was the sole applicant.
The chairperson’s post in Sanguem municipality is reserved for women.
“I am thankful to the people of my ward who gave me the opportunity to represent them. Now, there are more responsibilities which lie ahead,” said the newly elected chairperson.
Former MLA Vasudev Gaonkar and other Sanguem locals congratulated the chairperson.
