Architecture College pulled up for deficiencies in admitting students over sanctioned strength

Imposes penalty of Rs 10,000 to extend the approval for B Arch course for submitting the application after the last date and penalty of Rs 25,000 for introductory M Arch course for two courses

PANJIM: The Council of Architecture has pulled up the Goa College of Architecture, Altinho-Panjim for several deficiencies and admitting B Arch students which are more than the permitted number for five academic sessions.

The Goa College of Architecture from academic year 2019-2020 till the current academic year 2023-2024 admitted as many as 251 students. The intake capacity of the institution is 40 students, but it admitted 51 students during 2019-2020 and 50 students each for the next four academic sessions.

The executive committee of Council of Architecture has now directed the institution to reduce the intake of five seats every year for next six academic sessions for admitting students beyond the seats sanctioned and illegal admissions in the B Arch degree course without obtaining valid approval from the Council of Architecture.

The executive committee has also asked the institution to relocate/shift building premises within next six month since the current building is not suitable for architectural institution.

It has also been asked to frame its new syllabus immediately and to appoint new faculty members in compliance with Council of Architecture (Minimum Standards of Architectural Education Regulations) 2000.

The Academic Review Expert Committee during its visit to the institution to conduct an academic review of the B Arch, found that the institution had admitted students in excess for five academic sessions than the intake of 40 students sanctioned by the Council of Architecture.

Last year, the Council of Architecture had imposed a penalty of Rs 60,000 on the institution for submitting online application form beyond the last date. The institution submitted online application and uploaded the same on the Council of Architecture portal on March 17, 2023 when the last date for submission of applications by the institution was March 15, 2023.

The Council of Architecture had imposed a penalty of Rs 10,000 to extend the approval for B Arch course for submitting the application after the last date and Rs 25,000 for introductory M Arch course for two courses. Thus the Goa College of Architecture was asked to deposit Rs 60,000 in total as penalty.
