CALANGUTE: The owner of a dance bar which had been recently sealed in Calangute reportedly attempted to restart operations at a premise in Arpora, leading to sarpanch Roshan Redkar opposing the move tooth-and- nail stating that he would never allow dance bars to open in his village.
“We will always ensure that such places do not open in Arpora because their activities spoil the name of Goa. So far there is nothing like this in our village. If we get any applications for such places, we will reject them. Also we have urged residents and social activists that if they come across such places to inform us because panchayat members cannot keep vigil for 24 hours. So far it’s under control. It was a good decision by the government to shut these 11 places in Calangute because the people were against them,” Redkar told media persons.

He said that there are a number of popular clubs and nightspots in Arpora. “We welcome proper clubs. But not dance bars with dancing women which loot tourists. When we issue licences, we make it clear that no illegal activities will be tolerated,” Redkar said.
Asked whether they have come across any places having illegal activities like prostitution, he said there was one massage parlour which they had shut down around four years ago. “We suspected something because of the large number of bouncers and the long queues outside and realised the massage parlour was doing illegal activities. You have so many bouncers only if something illegal is going on. We immediately shut it down with the help of police. Since that time we have been very strict and not allowed anything like that,” he said.
