The eight year old project of hosting the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Delhi in October 2010 has docked the Congress Government in an embarrassing corner with Bhartiya Janata Party hitting at the Centre for organizational collapse.
Addressing a press conference on her first Goa visit, Arti Mehra termed CWG to Congress Wealth Games and slammed the government on not pacing up mega event project resulting into colossal waste of expenditure.
“Since the Game is hosted in India it should benefit domestic players of home ground. But the Government has slept over the project for the last eight years. It is nothing but 87,000 crore scam of which 37,000 crore have been allotted to sports,” lamented the former Delhi mayor.
She recalled of writing to the Prime Minister’s Office during her tenure of Delhi mayor between 2007 and 2009 of creating a single window for CWG, a suggestions which was not taken seriously.
“I had written to the Prime Minister’s Office to create a single window system for clearing all CWG related files to ensure proper work procedure. It was installed much later, only after the damage was done…they held only one meeting so far,” she said.
Speaking on inflation, Mehra lamented that the Prime Minister though a well-known economist failed to control price hikes making it difficult for underprivileged meet two meals a day.
In yet another issue that triggered debate across the country is the Prime Minister’s remark of granting autonomy to Jammu & Kashmir.
The senior leader, speaking to reporters today, has warned the Centre stating Kashmir is a part of India.
“PM is confused. Our demand to declare ISI as ‘terrorist group’ is still not solved…there were terror attacks in Mumbai and Pune. Kashmir is a part of India…he should not come under pressure of international agencies,” she said.
Couple of days before India celebrated its 64th Independence Day, Singh had said that they were willing to consider autonomy for the state within the ambit of the Constitution. BJP has sourly reacted to Singh’s statement, saying autonomy for J&K won’t be tolerated and termed the issue as unfortunate.
